Q
QPR
Quality, price ratio. A way to value a wine. Most of the time, this is for value wines.
Qualitätswein
Austria’s mark for quality wine. Qualitätswein wines are demarcated by a red-and-white striped bottle seal (typically found on the top of the capsule) that indicates the wine passed 2 inspections (a chemical and tasting analysis). Wines are made with 36 official grapes and labeled with one of the 16 wine regions or 9 Austrian states (e.g. Niederösterreich, Burgenland, Wien, Steiermark, etc).
Qualitätswein Bestimmter Anbaugebiete (QbA)
German quality classification meaning «quality wine from designated cultivation areas.» Producers may add sugar to these wines when grapes don’t meet the minimum levels of natural ripeness at harvest time. Usually a producer’s basic level wine, inexpensive and meant for everyday drinking, though there are some exceptions.
Qualitätswein mit Prädikat (QmP)
Former German quality classification meaning «quality with distinction» and including Germany’s best wines. See Prädikatswein.
Quaffer
Usually inexpensive wine without faults that is easy to drink on release.
Quinta
Portuguese term for Estate.
Qvevri
An egg-shaped type of amphora from the country of Georgia. See Amphora.
