Sipping into 2025: Top Wine Trends Shaping the Future of the Industry

13.04.2025

Hey wine lovers! Can you believe we’re already well into 2025? The wine world is changing faster than I can keep up with my Riedel glass collection, and I’m here for it! After chatting with some industry friends and doing a bit of my own «research» (aka drinking), I’ve put together this rundown of what’s hot in wine right now.

Sustainable Packaging Revolution

Okay, so packaging might not sound sexy, but trust me—this is huge. Those French winemakers are totally changing the game with paper wine bottles! I was super skeptical at first (paper?! for wine?!), but they’re actually pretty cool. Way lighter than lugging around those heavy glass bottles, and my eco-conscious friends in London won’t stop raving about them.

Some wine snobs are still turning up their noses, worried about how these bottles affect taste and how long the wine stays good. Fair questions, but honestly? The technology is improving crazy fast, and I’ve had some seriously delicious wines from these eco-bottles.

Low and No-Alcohol Wines Are Actually Good Now

Remember when non-alcoholic wine tasted like sad grape juice? Those days are GONE. My friend Emma switched to low-alcohol options after her second kid, and she introduced me to some that actually taste amazing.

Winemakers are getting clever—harvesting grapes earlier or picking vineyards in cooler spots to naturally create wines with less alcohol but still plenty of flavor. Perfect for Wednesday night book club when you still need to help with homework after!

Indigenous Grapes Making a Comeback

Forget your basic Cab Sauv—2025 is all about those weird grape varieties you can’t pronounce! Portuguese wines are having a serious moment with native grapes like Baga and Encruzado (just smile and nod like you know what those are).

Climate change is sadly a thing, so vineyards are looking at heat-resistant varieties from the Mediterranean that can handle the new weather patterns. Silver lining: we’re discovering some incredible «new» old grapes that haven’t had much spotlight until now.

Champagne’s Got Competition

Popping champagne will never go out of style, but my bank account is thrilled that other bubblies are trending! Champagne prices have gotten ridiculous lately, so I’ve been exploring crémant (French sparkling wine from outside Champagne) and it’s SO good for the price.

And don’t get me started on the spritz trend—my summer has been one long Aperol Spritz happy hour! Even my beer-drinking friends are getting on board with these light, bubbly cocktails.

Wine By The Glass Gets Fancy

Last month I was in this cute little bistro in Bordeaux where they’ve started this amazing wine-by-the-glass program. Instead of committing to a whole bottle, you can try like 5 different amazing wines without breaking the bank (or getting too tipsy!).

It’s genius—I got to sample some organic wines I’d never splurge on by the bottle. Perfect for wine newbies or when you’re out with friends who all want different things.

The wine world in 2025 is all about being flexible, sustainable, and actually accessible! Gone are the days when you needed to be a stuffy expert to enjoy good wine. Whether you’re sipping paper-bottled Merlot or raising a glass of low-alcohol bubbly, cheers to wine that fits how we actually live now!
