🗺 Sicilia
Sicilia (Sicily) is Italy’s southernmost region, and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. For more than 2500 years Sicily has been a significant center of Mediterranean viniculture, although the reputation and style of its wines has changed significantly over that time. The relationship between the island-wide Sicilia DOC and Sicilia IGT designations creates plenty of room for confusion. In 2011, Sicilia IGT was promoted to DOC status, and replaced by Terre Siciliane IGT. Sicily has 19 DOC areas. Interestingly, nearly 90 percent of DOC wines in Sicily are dessert wines like Marsala.
